Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia meets Ambassador of Lebanon

Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic received the Ambassador of the Republic of Lebanon in Belgrade, Toufic Jaber. In a friendly conversation they discussed current issues regarding bilateral cooperation between Serbia and Lebanon, with special emphasis on the participation of representatives of the Serbian Armed Forces (SAF) in UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.

The Lebanese Ambassador stressed that Lebanon highly appreciated the participation of the Serbian Armed Forces in UNIFIL, supported the augmentation of the SAF contingent in UNIFIL and assessed that this mission was important for all-round relations between the two countries because soldiers from the Republic of Serbia in Lebanon were among the most favorite due to their excellent communication with the local population. In addition, they also discussed issues regarding the conditions for the stay and work of Lebanese investors in Serbia.

Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic assessed that, because of its multicultural and multi-religious set-up, Lebanon was the leading country and “hub” of the Middle East where everything that occurs in the region is reflected. He also expressed hope that the current situation in Syria would not endanger the peace and prosperity of Lebanon.

Both sides expressed belief that the ties between Serbia and Lebanon would strengthen further in the months and years to come.

 

 

Speaker of the National Assembly receives the Ambassador of Lebanon in Serbia

The Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Nebojša STEFANOVIĆ received H.E. Toufic JABER, the Ambassador of Lebanon in Serbia, in a courtesy call.

The Speaker of the National Assembly reminded of historic, traditionally friendly relations between the two countries and expressed expectations that the overall bilateral relations, particularly parliamentary and economic, will progress in the future. STEFANOVIĆ thanked for the perseverance of Lebanon which was standing by our country even in hard times and expressed expectations that despite financial difficulties Serbia will in the near future open an Embassy in Beirut. Assessing that the space for improving all kinds of cooperation is large, STEFANOVIĆ said that he will support every initiative in that direction.

Ambassador JABER expressed satisfaction over the meeting and pointed out the significance which Lebanon is giving to Serbia as a partner in Europe, comparing the significance of our country with the importance which Lebanon attributes to relations with the Russian Federation.

He informed the Speaker of the National Assembly that Lebanon will not change its principle support to Serbia in regard with Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Ambassador of Lebanon also underlined the need for frequent contacts and cooperation on the parliamentary level and pointed to great opportunities within the economic cooperation, including investments into our country. He assessed that investments are in the bud and that appropriate systematic support is required which includes also a lasting and more operative solution to the problem of issuing visas.

Speaker STEFANOVIĆ and Ambassador JABER agreed in their assessment that it is necessary to strengthen also cultural ties between the two countries and agreed on further concrete actions to that end.
